Beyond "the shrink"
In the past, "therapy" typically meant going to an office, lying on a couch, and talking. It was assumed that just being able to talk through things would help. The therapist might give some interpretation or assessment, or might ask how things made the client feel.

Today, there are many options and approaches to doing counseling. My approach is to help people identify the "problem"-- what needs to change for them to feel happier, to reach their goals, to overcome difficulties and bad experiences in their past. We then work together to envision and take steps toward solutions--the things they would prefer to experience and do--by uncovering and building on their strengths and resources.

Solution-oriented and narrative work
Sees the problem as something that is coming between people and their preferred ways of living.

Recognizes that most people come to therapy because they have felt unable to handle some problem in a way that works for them.

Explores people's ideas, hopes, and dreams as well as how the problem (or problems) is interfering with the realization of those hopes and dreams.

Builds on each person's existing knowledge, strengths, and resources to make preferred ways of living more accessible.
